|So the day has come that you have decided to buy your first boat or perhaps you have owned one in the past, been on out your friends boat, either way it is an exciting time. You're excited; your wife is excited, the kids are excited, the neighbor is excited. After all, he lives next door and after all the barbeques the families have shared; it's going to be great when everyone gets out on the water together.
We live in Florida and are surrounded by water. Everywhere you go, there it is. That's why many of us moved here. From the ocean breeze, smell of fresh air, the warmth of the sun and the enjoyment our many beaches and wildlife. It just beckons us and calls our name.
Yes, boating on the ocean or our miles Intracoastal waterways, and the Florida Keys, is truly a wonderful adventure. But, it can kill you or a loved one in a split second. Things can go wrong so fast, you can't imagine. That's when proper safety training and experience comes into play. You're not going to achieve these overnight or in a weekend classroom. It takes time, continued learning and time on the water. I am a former member of the US Coast Guard. I preformed over 700 SAR, (search and rescue), cases as a Boat coxswain during my career in the Coast Guard. We saved a lot of lives, property and prevented many catastrophic outcomes. However, there were times; many, that we just couldn't get there in time.
Now I am not here trying to frighten anyone with sea stories. What I am trying to do is convince those who have the sense to realize that with proper boating safety training and common sense, you will have a wonderful, fulfilled time on the water, with memories that will last a lifetime.
So, I encourage you to take a boating safety course in your area. Take along an experienced friend on your first few trips, until you get the hang of boat operation. Have your boat surveyed by a competent marine surveyor. Look to make sure they are a member of SAMS®, The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors®. They hold their members to the highest of standards and are the best in the business. And on every trip, take along the number one most important safety feature... common sense.
